Aeons are one of the main focusses of Final Fantasy X as the purpose of Yuna's pilgrimage is to obtain all of the aeons. They can be summoned in battle to assist the characters by using magic and special abilities. You can control the aeons in battle using the Turn Based System as you do the characters.
